ELDER'S UPDATE

At the end of your life, what will your work declare? In 1 Corinthians 3:10-15, Paul warns the church at Corinth that at the end of time, each will give an account for the work they performed. He states how he built a foundation and then others built upon that foundation. People may use all sorts of different materials: gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, and straw. However when Jesus returns all of these materials will be tested by fire to prove the work for Christ performed. If the materials survive, they will receive a reward. If the materials do not survive, one may receive salvation but not much else. What is Paul saying? There are many ways to build a church and to share the gospel. In the end, each person will be tested for whether they used gimmicks and tricks to get others to join their church or “accept Christ” when in fact these people did not truly believe. We, as a church, want to build out of the gold, silver, and precious stones of the word of God. From our evangelism, to our community, to our membership, to our preaching and singing, to our leadership must be built upon the word of God. We do not seek the glitter and lights that draw crowds but prove to be nothing but hay and straw. Rather we seek the depth that only Christ and His word bring. May we work and live for the reward of heaven, rather than the reward of earth.  Brothers, sisters lets be a people who build with solid materials by being people transformed by the gospel carrying the gospel to those around us in need of the hope of Jesus Christ!

The Old Testament is a story of the Lord’s faithfulness to his people over the course of years.  After four years of ministering and evangelizing, answering questions and overcoming doubts, a friend of one of our members finally expressed interest in the gospel and making a decision to follow Christ.  Part of that decision included joining God’s people in worship on a Sunday morning.  By God’s grace this person joined the church for worship and responded positively, even thanking the member for their willingness to patiently walk with this friend.  Praise God for the way he works in his timing!

We want to hear from you! If you have a story of how you have seen God working in your life or the life of someone else in our church, we would love to include your story in our next newsletter. Please contact Rhiannon @ 570-850-2769 or by email at:  info@sunburycitychurch.org.
What's Happening At SCC

Forum: Want to understand what the Bible says about God’s Design for Gender and Identity? Join us on November 11th (evening) and November 12th (morning) at Emmanuel Bible Fellowship as we hear from Dr. Joseph Kim, Professor at Lancaster Bible College speak on what the Bible says about gender and sexuality and how we can lovingly respond.  Note this is a private event, open only for those within Sunbury City Church and our partner churches.  To attend, you must register at sunburycitychurch.com/forum (you will be redirected to a webpage from Emmanuel Bible Fellowship Church).

Members Meeting: Calling all members! On November 13th directly following the Sunday Gathering we will gather for our next members meeting.  We will eat and fellowship together followed by a time to hear what God is doing in and through Sunbury City Church.

Prayer Night: God invites his people to seek him in prayer.  Luke 18:1-8 shows the story of the persistent widow who kept pestering the wicked judge for justice.  Jesus says how much more ought we to pester the Lord in prayer who is a good and just God.  Thus would you consider joining us November 30th at 6:30pm in the Fellowship Hall as we gather to seek God in prayer for our church, our community, our world, and for one another.

Thanksgiving Board: Thanksgiving is a season to reflect on the practical grace of God in our daily lives. Throughout the year we press forward through life, while November provides space for us to rejoice in the blessings of God evident in our life.  Each Sunday in the month of November, take a moment to fill out a card with what you are thankful for and post on our Thanksgiving board so we may rejoice in the Lord together.
